This is not only the human condition “on retreat.” But, it is our continuous condition. We are shaped by the ideas that are seeded in us and the relational air that we breathe. And we are continuously exhaling ideas and relational air which those around us will inhale.

Habits are essential tools, tools which must be given to a child if he/she is ever to be well educated. But a sculptor who is overly fixated on his tools rather than focusing on the object of his creation, will fail to bring forth the beauty latent in a piece of marble.

We are all too aware of our profound flaws, the many ways in which we prove ourselves inadequate vessels. But still, He uses us, you and me. May there be ever more of Christmas in us and through us.

As another school year begins, parents and teachers take stock of the daunting privilege of nurturing the inner lives of children. We are sowing seeds today in the hope of fruit tomorrow.
